Looking for inspiration

Now that the socks are almost done (how many times have I said that recently?) I want to start a new project I've been thinking about for a while. I need to make a scarf for a rather conservative-dressing gentleman of my acquaintance. I've thought about several cable patterns, but I can't settle on one - and I really don't want to do a 1x1 rib or seed stitch. The yarn I am using is Karabella Aurora 8, a very small amount of dark grey at each end and black for the body of it. So, any ideas?
