Wowsers

No matter what certain friends may say, my apartment has never been as bad as the house of this Crazy eBay mom.

Off to work - one more day before the weekend, and one more sleep before the recital tomorrow. I've got Gilbert and Sullivan stuck in my head.

Grumble, moan, complain

I am very unhappy with my apartment management company today. Apparently they are finally getting around to descaling the pipes in my building. What they originally said was they were descaling the water heaters, which would have left me without hot water during a time I am normally not home anyway. No biggie. Now they say they are coming back in two weeks and we will be without hot AND cold water for THREE DAYS. Okay, two and a half days. Still. One tiny sop they give us: the toilets will still work and you can still pour things down the drain. Whoopdefreakindoo. Three days, people.

I may resort to bathing here:

Okay, not really - my love of nature extends to wandering out in it for a few hours, but I want a real shower when I get back home! (This pic taken at the Zilker Nature Preserve.) On the plus side, I do still have a gym membership so I can always go work out and use the showers there - showering in a public facility not being one of the great loves of my life. Ah well, life could be worse, I suppose. Sigh.

Seriously, no way

Goat merkins? Really?

Oh man, I wish I could see the splort from Lisa, Michelle, Sammi - oh heck, most of the gals I knit with - when they read this. Heh.

Change is the only constant

Typepad sucks. For several days now, I've been trying to upload photos to my photoblog and having no success. I haven't been able to show you things like this pretty fella who I met on my forays into the Zilker Nature center.

Now, the more observant of you will note that this blog is not, in fact, hosted on Typepad. This blog has, in fact, been posted via Blogger since its inception four years ago, and although there have been some bumpy patches, I can usually upload a stinkin' photo, darnit!

*puff*puff*

Fine, rant over. So now I am considering changing all my blogs - perhaps consolidating into one large one - but I think that option would only cause this one to become more jumbled than it already is. Yarn Utopia will probably change its name soon - if only to stop the confusion with Utopia Yarns and Yarntopia - but it should, I think, remain separate from my pure-ego-on-a-stick-called-my-camera blog. Yes, I have too much fun with my camera, what of it?

The upside is this: does anyone out there recommend a better site purely for a photoblog? I want to have posts that feature one or two photos, with some commentary, but with the photos as the obvious focal point. Typepad was supposed to be a better offering than Blogger, but as you can see, it just isn't panning out.

Yellow Rose of Texas?

Today being Earth Day, I decided to run out to the Zilker Nature Preserve and commune with Nature. Well, actually I communed with a lot of spider webs. I forgot the basic tenet of hiking trails, which is -- let someone else be the first. I did quite a bit of hiking (in totally inappropriate shoes, but that's another story) and got a few pictures of the fabulousness that is the Preserve and its surrounding trails. This happy little cactus was actually in the main part of the preserve, before you get to the enclosures where they have some birds (mainly hawks and owls, but they're all pretty).

Over the next few days I'll try to post more photos of the experience over at my photoblog.

Startitis, or avoidance?

Okay, I truly have tons of things to be doing here at home, and I was going to get some computer work done as well, but instead I have been watching movies and crocheting. I am not even working on the sweater I plan to have for Europe or any of the other 20 projects I should be working on for myself and others. Instead, I've started this doll for a HCW anniversary contest. Well, maybe this weekend I'll get some things done around here. And go to the gym again.

Dare to compare

So, as I mentioned the other day, I had a Dream Dinners session scheduled for this evening. I can say that it is very similar to Super Suppers -- perhaps a little more chaotic as the space we were in was smaller, but just as quick and easy to toss several meals together and go. I sampled the pesto basil pasta while we were there, and it promised many good things to come!

Instant Gratification

Happy feet...

...and an unhappy hook.

I decided I was tired of working on hats and my sweater for Wales when it is 98 degrees Fahrenheit here today (hot hot HOT!). So, I made me some fuzzy flippies. Heh. Now, back to the real work.

Interesting questions

I love looking at the search terms people used to find my site. Gems from this weekend:

- dinner for a month : You should really check out Dream Dinners or Super Suppers in your area. I can recommend the latter for certain - going to check out the former this week.

- Pee in your Pants : do you really need to search for instructions on this?

- anvils : You'll probably only see a reference to anvils here if I'm talking about Animaniacs. 'Cause they're crazy to the max.

Amazingly enough, no smut searches hit in the last 100 references. Although that second one...

Hiding out under there...

...I just made you say underwear. It's so odd when song lyrics get stuck in your head -- but I love this one. It's from "Pinch Me" by Barenaked Ladies (you were right about the BNL, Lisa :).

I did get out this morning and went walking through my neighborhood -- something I do not as frequently as I should. These beauties were hiding down at the base of a stone cliff. This is probably one of the more prominent wildflowers here in Central Texas, and I'll be darned if I remember the name of it. Somewhere around here I have my Wildflowers of Texas reference book...

Hint

When you have a few hours between church services (we had 3 pm and 8 pm Good Friday services, at both of which I sang), you should probably reconsider a plan to go to the movies.

We saw Phat Girls - a good story (albeit cinematography that was lacking), but it put me in totally the wrong frame of mind and mood to go back to the church and be solemn and sing Via Dolorosa. I tell ya.

It's all about me me meme

Well, I got no knitting or crocheting done this evening. I did not do my laundry, nor did I clean up a hard drive for a co-worker that I was supposed to do last weekend. However, I did go over to the gym and work out on the elliptical for a good length of time. One in the good book for me. Bet that tomorrow morning the scale says I gained weight.

I still have not caught up on all the things I clipped via bloglines, but here is a meme that I did get to - from woolygrrl.

A score of 40 is supposed to indicate spoilage...

Do you have:
(1) your own cell phone
(2) a television in your bedroom

( ) TiVo or a generic digital video recorder
(5) high-speed internet access (i.e., not dialup)
( ) a surround sound system in bedroom
(6) DVD player in bedroom
(7) at least a hundred DVDs
(aside: ummm...at last count I have almost 400 movies, mostly on DVD)
(8) a childfree bathroom
( ) your own in-house office
( ) a pool (does the apt complex pool count?)
( ) a guest house
( ) a game room
( ) a queen-size bed or larger
( ) a stocked bar
(9) a working dishwasher [9 years old this year]
(10) an icemaker [its broken - does that count?]
( ) a working washer and dryer
(11) more than 20 pairs of shoes
(12) at least ten things from a designer store
( ) expensive sunglasses
(13) framed original art (not lithographs or prints)
( ) Egyptian cotton sheets or towels

(18) a walk-in closet or pantry
( ) a yard
( ) a hammock
( ) a personal trainer

( ) at least $100 cash in your possession right now
(21) more than two credit cards bearing your name (not counting gas cards or debit cards)
(22) a stock portfolio ["portfolio" is kind of an overstatement]
(23) passport [everybody ought to have one!]
( ) a horse
( ) a trust fund (either for you or created by you)
( ) private medical insurance
( ) a college degree, and no outstanding student loans (aw, you had to qualify it with no outstanding loans. That'll be a while...)

Do you:
(24) shop for non-needed items for yourself (like clothes, jewelry, electronics) at least once a week
( ) do your regular grocery shopping at high-end or specialty stores
( ) pay someone else to clean your house, do dishes, or launder your clothes (not counting dry-cleaning)

( ) stay at home with little financial sacrifice
( ) pay someone else to cook your meals
( ) pay someone else to watch your children or walk your dogs
( ) regularly pay someone else to drive you
( ) expect a gift after you fight with your partner

Are you:
( ) an only child
( ) married/partnered to a wealthy person
( ) baffled/surprised when you don't get your way
(28) been on a cruise

Did you:
( ) go to another country for your honeymoon
( ) hire a professional photographer for your wedding or party
(37) take riding or swimming lessons as a child [both]
(38) attend private school
( ) have a Sweet 16 birthday party thrown for you

----so there you go, not quite 40 (M, if I were married or had gotten off my arse and moved to a decent place by now, betcha I'd beat your score. Not that I should be bragging about that, I guess. Oy, now I think I need to go do something for church or charity.)

So funny you'll pee your pants

Check out this site. Man, if I could have as much flexibility as those action figures, I'd be a heck of a lot more popular. Thanks go to Dooce for pointing out yet another great waste of time. :D

On the knitting/crocheting/whatever front: I've been working a bit on my sparkly sock again. I don't like the toe-up instructions that I am using, but I'll power on through this sock and then perhaps cast on a different pattern using a different colorway. Socks are at least portable beasties.

Three weeks to go until the next concert, then perhaps I'll have more at home time to finish some less portable items (including a couple for other people that I've not been working on as much as I should *blush*).

...but it's a good tired

Four hours work + four hours in the hot sun = 1 tired chica. ...and I didn't even play basketball.

I did, however, manage to take over seven hundred pictures in that 4 hour timeframe. I love the sports setting on my E-Volt. Right now I am going through them for gems to keep for the crew that played. Luckily, only one other person had a camera (less pictures of me!). Unluckily - that person was my boss, who I am sure managed to get at least one severely unflattering photo. Ah, well. I got a few of those, myself. :D

800 Happy Texts

Sinus problems suck. But in the spirit of Pollyanna, I can at least be happy that I am not more seriously ill. Me for the neti pot.

At any rate, since I had some time for a change to browse through the blog rings (hey, sick days from rehearsal have to be good for something) I came across a few calls for posts that I thought I'd respond to as I had the chance.

The first of these is from Faith, who asked that we post pictures of our hands. Well, this is certainly not the best picture I could have taken, but I haven't gotten good at self portraitry yet, and I don't have someone else to point and shoot. :D Click on the photo to the left for a larger version.

Holy guacamole

I watch very little television these days, so imagine my surprise when catching a five minute glimpse of The King of Queens to see Peter Tork as the wedding MC. Scruffy, but still cute (in a much older guy kind of way :).
